He was a personal friend of Kauage and tutored by him. Shortly after, Simon Gende developed his own style and themes, which he still devotes himself to. Simon Gende has already had exhibitions in Australia, Fiji and New Zealand and is one of the most important genuine representatives of the first generation of the painting art movement.

2020 was marked by non-critical, manipulative, polarizing, and one-sided media reporting, as well as the restriction of personal mobility, the suppression of freedom of expression (based on non-scientific principles), and the emergence of something that has not yet been used to this extent in Austria by government parties. The political instrument of the “politics of fear”.

A sad and alarming sign of a change that needs to be critically questioned and constantly observed to recognize trends and directions on time to see possible negative impacts on the lives of the general Austrian public.

However, the year 2020 also had positive highlights, at least for us, the Kornhäusl’s:

• In January, I was able to take the final exam (after completing the course in less than the minimum period of study) and completed the MBA course with high distinction.
• In March, on the first day of the Corona restrictions in place in Kenya, our second daughter decided to start exploring the world. Marie-Sophie Habiba Luna (MSHL) was born on the 13th of March 2020, weighing 3.56 kg and with a height of 51 cm.
• Home-schooling (HS) at the International German School in Nairobi was introduced in March and lasted the entire calendar year. This brought some challenges but also brought us closer as a family.
• In March, the DBTA network office closed for a few weeks, and the mode was switched to the home office (HO). Fortunately, the office was able to reopen after a few weeks due to the low Corona infection rates in Kenya. This enabled the team to coordinate the implementation of the programs signed for. The Social Structure Fund Project Phase II (SSFP-II), the Global Program (GP), the Erasmus Pilot Program between the European and African Union (SAAM), and others were successfully continued after an intensive phase of redesigning the implementation of work packages.
• My contract with the Salesian Continental Network Office for TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) in Africa was extended (with the consent of all parties involved).
• And “last but not least”, I decided to expand my scooter collection to include scooters from the 80s and 90s. Some exhibits have already been secured so that the collection now contains around 120 vehicles.

All in all, we, the Kornhäusl’s, can look back on the thoroughly positive year 2020 but at the same time, we are concerned with the understanding of democracy of some of our Austrian politicians and the associated changes in the political landscape and especially the non-emergence of political alternatives in our beautiful Austria.

Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year 2021 to all our friends, relatives, and people we know worldwide, and all the best for the new year. May all your wishes come true.

2020 taught us a lot. We wish for our family of mankind that “together” comes more into the general focus than the celebration of individualism, as this does not support development in the long run.

Furthermore, it is our wish for 2021 too, that all members of our human family question and analyze information, situations, and conditions in a more critical manner in order to understand the background of the propaganda (we are not referring to the common term as we understand it now but to the approaches and explanations of Edward Bernays) of those who pull the strings. All people should come to a point at which they understand and, based on their increased knowledge and insights, make evidence-based and for themselves the right choices. Nobody should be caught by the newly emerging negative propaganda of the “politics of fear”.

With these thoughts again all the best and we look forward to a wonderful 2021.

The Family Without Borders – The Kornhaeusl’s

3 years working in TVET for the young people in Africa with “DON BOSCO Tech Arica (DBTA)” – An update

In September 2017 the network office began its active work and I also joined the DBTA team as a program manager. DBTA is the technical support office of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Sub-Saharan Africa for the field of ​​”Technical and Vocational Education and Training”. The target group is the Youth, especially the disadvantaged and marginalized ones. The support covers 34 countries and 102 vocational training centers.

The aim of the work of the office is to create internal network structures and thereby strengthen external networking on the continental level in the field of TVET on the one hand, and to establish an acceptance for technical education on regional, continental and international political level and make TVET a first career choice on the other. Furthermore, and in the same way important, to establish the network office as a continental focal point for TVET topics and internal and external stakeholders.

Everything began with one cooperation, with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), but soon the office established further co-operations. Projects, especially in the area of ​​capacity building, were developed in cooperation with these international partners:

• projects under different budget lines/titles with the BMZ
• La Francophonie, Dakar
• the International Labor Organization (ILO), Turin
• Commission of the European Union, Brussels
• the African Union, Addis Ababa
• the African Development Bank, Abuja & Maputo
• the Catholic Institute of Education, Johannesburg
• World Skills International and World Skills Africa
• Porticus and many other NGOs and key-player in TVET

This made a significant contribution to the network building and increased the quality of the service delivery, which is reflected through the documents listed below. These documents represent a sustainable and profound basis for the further development of the network office and its members:

• Creation of a continental quality manual for Job-Service Offices/Officers (in 4 languages)
• National labor market surveys in 25 African countries (in the respective national language) and a labor market study at continental level (in English and French)
• Support in the establishment of TVET strategic plans for 14 countries
• Development of a solar training program in 6 volumes/books (not yet completed)
• Development of a quality manual for the Centre Management of TVET centers (based on ISO standards)
• Adoption of the Life Skills Manual from CIE and its translation (into English and Portuguese)
• Creation of video clips on topics related to vocational training in Africa

Based on these documents, key personnel from all over the continent have been trained to pass on this knowledge to their respective countries. The following tasks were also successfully worked on:

• Establishment of the Salesian Job-Service Offices in the respective countries
• Joint webinars with the African Union on topics of continental interest in the field of TVET
• Joining of the working group for “Vocational Education” and “Vocational Counseling and Career Guidance” of the African Union
• Development of a project (together with European partners and the EU) for the exchange of European and African teachers and vocational students in order to promote mutual learning and understanding on the subject of vocational training between Africa and Europe
• Development of a training program (in cooperation with the ILO, Turin) for vocational school management and training of the entire management of all Salesian vocational schools in sub-Saharan Africa
• Organization of annual continental network meetings and specialist events with internal and external key persons or organizations in the area of TVET

Through this work, the financial resources could also be increased to a double-digit million Euro amount. Now it’s time to build on this solid basis over the next few years. On the one hand, the internal structures must be further strengthened and the exchange between the internal stakeholders increased. On the other hand, TVET and its social significance must be raised at an international level and the acceptance of this career path must be increased.

The next three years are just around the corner with many tasks to execute…

On March 13th, 2020 at 09.03 a. m. our second daughter, Marie-Sophie Habiba Luna, was born. She has a couple of names, because we simply couldn’t agree on one. So each of the family member was allowed to choose one name. This is how it came about that Marie-Sophie has three names; Marie-Sophie from Roland, Habiba from Amina (it was the name of Amina’s mother) and Luna given by Marie-Therese Aisha. Marie-Sophie weighed 3.56 kg and was 51 cm tall at birth. She grows, thrives and does what she is supposed to do … crying, laughing, eating and pooping.

I finally got, after completing my master studies in Project and Process Management last year, the graduation documents and certificates. Passed with high distinction (overall percentage 94.3 %) and completed in under the minimum study time. Now its official, the MBA-Holder R.K.

Marie-Therese has been on home-schooling since mid-March. The students are being taught by the German International School Nairobi through additional homework’s and self-studies as well as through sessions in virtual classrooms from time to time. A change at the beginning. This was a bit of a change in the approach. However, with a strategic approach and a little discipline, it is absolutely possible. Only the social interaction with other students and friends is missing.

Corona is also turning our planning (but not life) of the year upside down. After three years we were looking forward to a few weeks in Austria after renewing our contract here in Nairobi. At the moment we don’t know if this will be possible. We still hope that we will be able to go. I don’t want to say more about the whole “Corona Thing” as it would require a longer discussion about SARS-CoV-2 but also many other topics. Only so much: I am personally stunned and shaken by the one-sided, not at all evidence-based and scientific reporting as well as handling of the situation. I am happy to have a deeper exchange with people interested in. Kindly shoot me an email.

The four Musketeers Kornhaeusl’s

Training and workshops were conducted for members in the areas of

- Strategy planning (for selected personnel in Nairobi)

- Quantitative Data Analysis (for the national lead persons of the continental market survey in Nairobi)

- Life skills (for national Salesian employment agencies in Lagos)

- Digital marketing and cooperation with the industries (for national employment agencies and people from the planning and development offices in Maputo)

- Kick-Off Workshop for the Global Program (for participating countries in Nairobi)

In addition, the annual meeting of national TVET-Coordinators and Job Service Officers was organized as well as some initiatives launched for 2020. Exchange programs between the National Job Service Officers were also organized to give them a better insight into other systems, so that they could learn from them and adopt them to their environment and into their daily routine.

As already mentioned, the continental labor market survey report as well as some country reports were completed and published.

The development of the training module for solar technicians in English as well as the organization of the participation of the African Development Bank and African Union in the annual stakeholder’s meeting can be cited as a great success.

Network meetings in Rome and Nairobi with congregation leaders and Salesian NGOs were also part of the annual program.

Besides work, the year was characterized by intensive learning, which paid off with the graduation of a Master in Business Administration with high distinction (overall marks of 94.5% which is equivalent to the average marks of 1.1 out of a maximum of 1 [1 is the best and 5 would be failed]).

As a result, my family had to put up a lot on their shoulders and therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to say a very heartfelt “thank you”. Without their support, I would not have been this successful.

We also had a lovely visit from friends like Viktoria, “our teacher”. Viktoria had been teaching Marie-Therese Aisha for a year when we were working in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. Our long-time friend Dr. Wolfgang Böhm visited us as well. A very warm thank you to the two who enriched our year. I also had the chance to see “old” dear friends from Papua New Guinea and the time at the commercial collage in Feldbach after a long time.

So, that’s what happened, I guess … time flies so quickly.

… and yes, I almost forgot … in March we can say “welcome” to another Kornhäusl.

… the year was pretty busy with work for the organization I’m currently working with, the Salesians of Don Bosco, or better known as “Don Bosco”. The organization launched a new office in 2017, which I am part of since September 2017. The office serves as the network and coordination office of the 100 Salesian vocational schools, which are located in 35 African countries.

The main focus of the office is to establish structures and to execute capacity building on all levels. Furthermore, it is mandated to create an active network between the different groups within the organizaton but also externally. The activities aim to improve the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for students, to modernize the vocational training, to make it more attractive for the Youth and to establish the training with the Salesian-holistic approach to a well-known brand.

In order to reach these goals set within the project, I carried out the following activities during the year of 2018:

Organization of 6 workshops with participants from 30 African countries

Organization of a 1-month-training for 14 principals in Germany and Italy

Creation and publication of an Africa-wide Job-Service-Officer’s Quality Manual in 4 languages ​​ (English, French, Portuguese and Spanish) in the area of ​​job placement for the benefit of school leavers

Production of 2 introductory video clips on the Salesian network “DON BOSCO Tech Africa”, which is the umbrella organization of 100 vocational schools in 35 African countries

Participation in 2 national, 2 continental and 1 global conference

Conducting and gathering data for market surveys in 28 African countries with a data volume of around 250,000 data in cooperation with the World Bank, using computer assisted personal interview technique (CAPI) and various consultants. Evaluations and reports will be available from March 2019 on wards.

Travel to: Mozambique, Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda, India, Georgia, Tanzania, within Kenya, Zambia, South Africa, Ethiopia (x4), Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Cameroon (x2), Italy and Austria (x2)

Conclusion: 24 weeks on duty travel and not (at home) in Nairobi … 21 weekends on the way … a big thank you to my family, who always supports me.

And now? Let’s see what 2019 has prepared for me!

As you can see on the pics we just came at the time Mr. Haehndke was committed in living his german culture & tradition (to ease his return to Germany after years in the South Pacific – we guess). As we – completely unexpected – arrived at his place and gratulated to his win he did not want to believe that Fortuna just made him the second winner of the riddle and that even the price (one tin of a tasty South Pacific Beer) enabled him much more to live his german culture and tradition on this day.

Part of my work here is done on diocesan level with discussions and decisions about future goals and the way to probably reach them,

another part is on the department level to discuss and give consultations (as for example here for the diocesan Health Office) in financial and administration matters,

or to receive international donors and to take part in financial discussions as well as supervise budget planing sessions and advice on procedures and approaches (in this case between Light for the world and Callan Service for Disabled Bougainville)

as well as talks in the field to get proper information which will help to understand situations and lead to possible solutions for problems

but also just to listen and catch moods as you can see here on different field trips.

Stand up early and with a little bit of luck you might find different kind of mushrooms. I found three different once which I even did not know before and not able to name them in English. Anyway, each of them can be prepared and used for different kind of food.

…. and as a regular visitor on our page and blog you might already know what’s coming next. And yes you are right - me and my team tried it out all. We found the right once for beef stew, the right once which are going along which a typical Austrian food called “Semmelknoedel” and we were even able to provide mushrooms with crunchy skin. One kind has a very strong texture, others are a little slimy and watery. Others good for deep frying – each suitable for several kind of dishes.

So end of the day you might come (after all my blogs concerning food) to the conclusion that it is like in Austria – only that the pigs are fishes, the cows are crocodiles, the sheep and goats are turtles, the chickens for grayfish and squids, the apples are pawpaws, the cherries are laulau, the berries are rambutan, the spinach are ferns, the potatoes are different kinds of roots. But generally all things here are basically actually more or less almost the same as in Austria, aren’t they?
